CCA volunteers help hundreds of kids learn fishing skills

Almost 500 young people learned fishing and conservation skills during the Family & Youth Casting Call Friday and Saturday with the support of a number of CCA MD volunteers. The annual event is held on the C&O Canal in Washington and young people have the chance to catch planted fish under the supervision of adults.

“We put rods in the hands of 160 kids Friday, most for the first time,” said Brad Gentner, CCA member and lead organizer of the event. “On Saturday we had more than 300 kids fish along with more than 300 parents, again many of whom were fishing for the first time. And these are just the attendees that checked into the fishing safety station. It was truly a great experience for the kids, their parents, and all the volunteers who had the chance to see young people experience the joy of fishing.”

In addition to Gentner, other CCA MD volunteers were Heather Bowen, co-organizer; Jim Greene, who conducted a class on trout; Larry Jennings, who handled food; Friedrich, who worked with the young anglers baiting hooks and teaching casting; and Eric Whisenhunt, who ran the safety booth.

Too Many Menhaden Being Taken

An international group of marine scientists is calling for cuts in commercial fishing for sardines, herring and other so-called forage fish whose use as food for fish farms is soaring. The catch should be cut in half for some fisheries, the scientists say, to protect populations of both the fish and the natural predators that depend on them.

CCA Maryland membership jumps in March

CCA membership in Maryland increased by 20 percent from March 2011 to March 2012, according to figures that will be released at the CCA National Board of Directors meeting.

“This significant increase clearly demonstrates that recreational anglers in Maryland see the value of belonging to our organization even in tough economic times,” said Executive Director Tony Friedrich. “In Maryland we are taking strong advocacy positions and calling attention to problems that negatively impact our natural resources. This action is making a difference, and Marylanders are responding by joining CCA.

“A number of individuals deserve credit for this increase, including Trent Zivkovich and his government relations team; Gary Reich, Jim Flannery and others who coordinated an outstanding first banquet for our revitalized Annapolis chapter; David Sikorski who managed the first CCA MD Pickerel Tidal Fishing Championship; and those who supported other events that resulted in new members.

“The challenge for all of us now is to continue the progress we have been making to establish CCA Maryland as an even more powerful voice for recreational anglers.”
