For this project we’re proud to be working with our great friends at the CBEC to build important shoreline protection for the region. These reef balls will provide important protection against erosion and support the growth of SAV in the shallows in the region. We’ll bet that they’ll also create a great place to catch a perch or a rockfish in a few years.
There are multiple nature trails for an enjoyable hike or bird watching on the grounds, and you may also rent kayaks and enjoy some peace and quiet once volunteering is complete. For their story, visit bayrestoration.org and find out more about CBEC.
9/30 will be a day of finalizing mold set up and pouring reef balls from a concrete truck. Times are likely to change, please keep an eye out for a message from staff or reach out to Mason Hendrick at (410)271-1943 or mason.hendrick@gmail.com
Reef balls are a specially designed artificial reef unit that are used worldwide to build and restore reef habitat. Here in the Chesapeake, reef balls provide important three-dimensional habitat for oysters and many other filtering organisms to attach to. They also provide hollow structure for juvenile fish and crabs to hide from predators. Yes, it’s those predators we pursue as anglers, so reef balls also make some great fishing spots too.
