Our next meeting is Thursday April 25th at the VFW at 815 Turkey Point Rd North East MD 21901 at 7:00 pm. Thursday is seafood night some come early for dinner.

Our guest speaker is Captain “Walleye” Pete Dalhberg. I am sure many of you know or have heard of Capt. Pete, he has been guiding on the bay from one end to the other now for years. He has a great new boat with some amazing state of the art electronics on board and I am sure he will share the details. He has been fishing the flats this month and as many of you know there have been no fish. There were a couple of good days in the start of April but it was brief and the fish were mostly small for flats standards.

With opening day this Saturday it will be interesting to see how the Boat Yard Bar & Grill Catch & Release Tournament will do. If we are all lucky and they catch fish, it may just be a bad year on the flats. If not it may be a harbinger of things to come. I fished Virginia Beach this December with Captain Pete and although we caught 30 fish, we were the exception, nobody else did as well. The “Shoot Out” in VA had one fish caught in their tournament and OC had a dismal tournament this year. No fish on the flats fits the pattern and last year’s spawn was bad as well.

Hope to see you at the meeting, we would like to hear what you think and see what Capt. Pete has on his mind.

Tight Lines,

Steve

A Family Fishing Event for Future Nature Enthusiasts

What better way to get kids “hooked” on nature than by teaching them how to fish? This April, the Family & Youth Casting Call will once again help “set the hook” for children to learn about nature and fishing in the Washington, DC area. A wiggling fish on the end of the taut line can be one of the most tangible connections between having fun outside and learning about conserving our natural resources.

On this action-packed day, partners will provide all the tools and training necessary for families to catch fish in the C&O Canal. Volunteer instructors will teach safety and basic fishing techniques and our sponsors will supply the bait and tackle for the day’s event. For this event, a portion of the C&O Canal will be stocked with native fish and all children will have the opportunity to catch fish.

Fish artWhen not fishing on the canal, children will complete a series of hands-on activities to earn their National Park Service Junior Ranger Badge. Learning stations set up around the facility will teach fly-tying, water quality testing, bug identification and more. There will also be plenty to do for the little ones including fish art, touch tanks and scavenger hunts.

If you are looking for opportunities to get your kids outside to appreciate nature and provide wholesome family fun, then make sure you visit Fletcher’s Cove in the C&O Canal National Historical Park on May 3 and 4. We can help you and your kids get hooked on fishing!

Interested anglers should keep checking our website, FYCC blog,Facebook, Twitter and You Tube page for the most up-to-date information. Register to Volunteer
