For the fourth straight year, elementary students from Calvert County Public Schools are helping to restore the Chesapeake Bay. A special hands-on partnership with CCA Maryland and the CHESPAX program made it possible.
This year, all 1,200 fifth graders from Calvert County’s 12 elementary schools participated in the Living Reef Action Campaign by building reef balls designed to create new oyster habitat in local waters.
The project gives students a hands-on lesson in conservation work. After the reef balls are deployed, they will help support oyster growth, improve water quality, and provide habitat for marine life throughout the Bay.
What started as a unique educational effort has grown into one of the region’s largest youth-driven habitat restoration projects — showing students they can make a real impact on the future of the Chesapeake Bay.
