CCA Maryland is a proud partner of Calvert County Public Schools to support reef ball building with each 5th grade class in the county through their CHESPAX program.
Volunteers are welcome at each reef ball build, but must complete the volunteer link below before supporting the event.
Additional volunteers are requested to support the towing of trailers to and from schools. Interested parties should have a 1/2 ton or greater vehicle and will be offered reimbursement for the mileage driven in support of the program. Calvert County Volunteer Policy.
In order to volunteer with students enrolled in Calvert County Public Schools, you must first register with the school system as a volunteer. Once approved, visit the elementary school where you plan to volunteer to have your ID scanned. **If you have been through this process already during the 2021-2022 school year, you do not need to register again until the 2022-2023 school year begins.
Follow the Online Volunteer Application Process. **Be sure to choose ‘CHESPAX’ as well as the school(s) where you will be going to volunteer, especially if you plan to go to more than one school.
You will receive an email notification when you are approved. This could take up to 2-3 days.
**Masking is now optional while on CCPS property and inside all CCPS buildings.
Reef balls are a specially designed artificial reef unit that are used worldwide to build and restore reef habitat. Here in the Chesapeake, reef balls provide important three-dimensional habitat for oysters and many other filtering organisms to attach to. They also provide hollow structure for juvenile fish and crabs to hide from predators. Yes, it’s those predators we pursue as anglers, so reef balls also make some great fishing spots too.
Volunteers will be working on behalf of CCA Maryland. You will be outside in teams (or individually) to assemble reef ball molds and then help fill the reef balls with concrete delivered from a truck.
Bathrooms are available, as well as a place to sit in the shade and enjoy your lunch or take a break.
This is a simplified version of what we do for the Living Reef Action Campaign when working with students or other partners. For most reef ball builds, we hand mix concrete or use small electric mixers. For others, a concrete truck will arrive and you will help fill the molds you’ve assembled using gravity as your friend.
Depending which day you attend, you may remove the molds from previously built reef balls first and set molds up for another pour later that day.
Yes! There is no maximum sized group to participate. We will aim to build around 25 reef balls per day, and can likely add to that number with additional molds for the right group.

We’d recommend long pants and multiple layers in light colors. For one, lighter colors are cooler in the sun. What’s the second reason? Some say that biting flies seem to be more attracted to darker fabrics.
Bring layers and changes of clothes based on your own assessment of the weather. We have gloves you can borrow. Closed toed shoes are best, especially ones that you can get dirty.

The RSVP is largely used so we can communicate with you leading up to the event and let you know if there are any changes due to weather, or other common logistical headaches.
When you volunteer, your name is added to a list for each day, and whoever is in charge of that days work will communicate with you.
