Did you know that Maryland DNR conducts an annual Oyster Population Fall Survey each year to review the overall health of the oyster population?

2017 Fall Dredge Survey Spat Set – Source MD DNR

Surveys that asses the health of our natural resources like these should guide managers in determining how to best utilize our oyster resources.  Information like disease prevalence and spat per bushel can be found in each report.

As a keystone species of the Chesapeake Bay, oysters are of the utmost importance to the regional ecosystems.  By providing ecosystem services like water filtration & habitat creation, oyster reefs directly support successful fishing opportunities for all in the Chesapeake.
